The Hudson Valley had a wintry tease of snow showers earlier this week, leaving many wondering when the first true snow day would be.
Despite a modest chill in the air during the week ahead, it doesn’t appear that the stars will align for a winter storm. However, as you’ll read a little later, it looks like it’s only a matter of time ⏳
After today’s (Sunday’s) rain, a mostly dry week is expected until next weekend.
Monday: breezy with near average temperatures for the time of year
Tuesday: cooler than Monday, dry 📉 (around 40)
Wednesday: 🥶 a particularly cold start around 20; chillier than Tuesday (upper 30s) 📉
Thursday: chilly again (upper 30s), chance for a few flakes late in the day
Friday: dry with temperatures on the upward swing 📈
Saturday-Sunday: looking dry and mild on Saturday, chance for some rain and wind on Sunday with warm temperatures for the time of year
Looking ahead to the week of December 11th, conditions are looking likely to lean milder for the time of year.
Troughs of low pressure will frequently favor the western U.S. over the next two weeks, seeing ridges of high pressure pass over the central and eastern states.
Occasionally, this will result in warm air from the Gulf of Mexico reaching our neck of the woods, such as around December 10th.
Where’s the snow? 🤔
If you’re looking for snow, you can find it in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Frequent storms over the next week will bring feet of snow to the Intermountain West.

Late December/early January ❄️
As I have been saying in my winter weather outlooks, patience will be a virtue this season. We’re getting closer to the period of the season that I’m most interested in: January and February.

Pōhutukawa bloom 🔴
If you’ve followed my newsletters over the years, you would know that I send photos of New Zealand’s classic crimson Christmas tree every year around this time.
It’s a coastal evergreen tree in the myrtle family that produces a brilliant display of red flowers, typically blooming in late November and December.
They are blooming everywhere around Auckland at the moment. The trees are buzzing harbors of insect life, as honey bees feed on the flower’s sweet nectar for energy 🐝
Traditional indicators used by Maori to forecast weather and climate suggested that pōhutukawa trees that flower from the bottom up, rather than the top down, imply a warm and pleasant summer ahead.
I think we’re in luck this year 🌞
