On Thursday, it reached 85 degrees in the Hudson Valley, 25 degrees above average for the time of year. It was the equal-second earliest 85 degree temperature at Poughkeepsie on record. It was in the mid 30s early this morning and it’s expected to dip into the upper 20s on Monday morning 🥶
It gets worse.
A coastal low on Monday night threatens to drop snow in parts of the region 😱
It’s April weather at its finest — enjoy the good moments, because they’re fleeting. Before you know it, a switch will be flipped and it will be 85-90 degrees with high humidity.
As a chilly area of high pressure slides eastward on Monday night, it will give way to a strengthening coastal low pressure system.
Rain will start on Monday evening in the Hudson Valley, with the potential for wet snow late at night over higher elevations of 1000+ feet, such as in the Taconics and Hudson Highlands. Depending on the exact track of the low, a period of heavy precipitation during the early hours of Tuesday morning could “dynamically cool” the atmosphere and cause snow to fall to lower elevations ❄️
A lot of things need to go right (or wrong depending on your view!) for impactful, accumulating snow in April, but we do have a few of the necessary ingredients lining up: occurring at night, an unusually cool air mass in place before the storm, a deepening coastal low, and heavy precipitation rates.
At this point, the potential for snow is something to be aware of — the forecast will become clearer over the next 24-36 hours. Follow along on Twitter for updates as necessary.
⚠️ The risk for accumulating snow will be higher over the Catskills, where several inches will be possible above 1000 ft and a heavier accumulation is possible above 1500 ft. The weight of the snow could bring down trees and power lines. For Catskill-based schools that are not on spring break this week, school disruptions are possible on Tuesday.
The storm will quickly pull away on Tuesday morning, leaving cool, blustery conditions in its wake with scattered showers.
Despite a chilly start to the day, Wednesday looks nice 👌
Thursday will be warmer than Wednesday but with more clouds. There’s a chance for a late-day shower as a weakening front passes through the region.
Friday looks warm and probably dry. The weekend is a bit of a toss up at the moment (a front could stall near the area, or not) but I’m leaning toward a warmer one overall 🤞
The week of the 25th will have more of those ups and downs that we’ve grown accustomed to. It might turn cooler toward the tail end of the month.
Have a great week - especially to those headed back to school for the home stretch!
