Greetings! The upcoming storm has trended warmer with time, meaning that it won’t pack as much of a wintry punch.
Nevertheless, some frozen hydrometeors will be falling from the sky tonight — and pinging off your roof 🌨️
The atmospheric temperature profile appears primed for sleet, which involves a “warm nose” of above freezing air some 8000 ft up. Here, snowflakes partially melt before falling down through the atmosphere where they refreeze as ice pellets.
Overall, it has the makings of a sloppy event.
What? A mix of wet snow, sleet, and rain
When? Beginning between 6:00-9:00 pm today from south to north, ending Saturday morning
How much? A coating to at most 2 inches with the highest amounts in elevated areas
Impact? Above freezing temperatures should generally prevent frozen precipitation from sticking to the roads, except in the Catskills where below freezing temperatures are forecast. Schools may wish to cancel after school activities that run past 6:00 pm. Road conditions on Saturday morning should be just wet.
Sunday is looking dry and milder. Have a good weekend and I’ll be in touch on Sunday.
Thank you, Ben. You are my weather husband.
