After hearing the sleet ping off your roof for hours on Friday night, you must have been left wishing for the return of meteorological winter, which was more spring-like than March has been so far!
You’ve probably heard the saying “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” 🦁 👉 🐑
It’s used to describe the typical weather progression of the month of March: fierce like a lion to start and more gentle like a lamb to finish.
It’s said to have originated as a reference to the prominence of the constellations Leo (a lion) and Aries (a ram or lamb) in the night sky during the month of March.
So, will there be any truth to the saying this year? As I look ahead, I can’t help but think the answer is yes!
For the week ahead, we’ll have more lion-like days than lamb-like ones:
🐑: Monday, Friday
🦁: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday
Monday: with high pressure in control, it’s looking good 🌤️
Tuesday: a weak low pressure system will be passing near the region during the morning. If it passes overhead (less likely), it would spell a brief period of accumulating snow. If it misses (more likely), clouds would give way to sunshine with dry conditions. I’ll be watching this and will provide an update if necessary.
Wednesday: clouds and sun but with a brisk northerly wind! 🌬️
Thursday: like Wednesday 💨
Friday: like Wednesday-Thursday but without the wind ☀️
Saturday-Sunday: this is where it gets interesting… monitoring the potential for a coastal storm (of course it would land on a weekend 🤦♂️)
I’ll be keeping an eye on the weekend forecast throughout the week and you should too — especially if you have plans. The disturbance responsible for the potential weekend weather will be moving ashore in California on Wednesday, which is when the Hudson Valley’s weekend forecast should become clearer.
Looking ahead to the week of the 13th, it’s looking colder than average with the risk for an additional storm. Old man winter isn’t done with us yet!
📣 Goshen shout out!
In the lead up to last Tuesday, Goshen was busy pulling out all the stops to give themselves the best chance of having a snow day.
🚆 With this level of readiness, the snow day train had far too much momentum to be stopped!
A special thanks to Goshen Intermediate for their dedication and support to the snow day cause 👏
Sun sets on summer 🌇
Here in the Southern Hemisphere, the sun has set on meteorological summer. It was Auckland’s wettest summer on record, but so far, meteorological fall has been much kinder to us. We were treated to this most incredible, fiery sunset earlier this week. It was easily the sunset of the year so far and probably top-5 in the last 5 years.
Hope you have a fiercely good week ✌️
That is an absolutely gorgeous sky! Thank you for sharing it! Have a fantastic week!
Absolutely love your weather posts!!!’
