Monday is the spring equinox! 🌞

The spring, or vernal, equinox is one of two the days of the year when the Northern and Southern Hemisphere receive a near-equal amount of light. The sun appears to be directly overhead of the equator at noon. On the summer solstice in June, it will appear overhead of the Tropic of Cancer — its northernmost point, coinciding with our longest days.

This year, Mother Nature is ushering in the new season in style! With highs in the 50s and 60s, the weather this week will contrast significantly with last week’s nor’easter.

However, this time of the year, wall-to-wall sunshine for a week straight is very unusual. Things will take a damp turn later on, but hey, at least it isn’t snow and it won’t be that cold!

• Monday: spring starts on a high note, enjoy the sunshine

• Tuesday: the good vibes continue with temperatures several degrees warmer than Monday

• Wednesday: remaining mild, but some clouds start to roll in

• Thursday: mild as a a front approaches from the west, bringing a chance for passing showers

• Friday: a front may linger nearby, keeping the chance for showers in the forecast — lower forecast confidence

• Saturday: remaining unsettled? A low pressure system may track across the region, bringing rain or remain to the south — keep an eye on the forecast

• Sunday: probably the brighter weekend day, but the forecast still isn’t in complete focus

Looking at temperatures, the areas shaded in red on map below indicate where it will be at least 55˚F this week — the Hudson Valley is included!

Looking ahead to the week of the 27th, more ups and downs are expected. We might just be done with snow, but I’d like to get a clearer picture of next week before calling the snowy season complete.

As I look a little farther ahead, I see a pattern that appears conducive to proper spring weather, rather than a flip right from winter to summer this year. Hopefully that is welcome news, even if it is a bit cool at times!
