I recall my high school graduation back in 2009. A 60% chance for thunderstorms. Just your average late June day in the Hudson Valley. Nervous decision makers were pacing the halls: will we need to move it inside?
I remember looking at the showers on the radar, some of which were in close proximity to Valley Central. In the interest of safety (from thunderstorms), the event was brought inside, although I don’t think it rained a whole lot in the end.
I don’t envy having to make that call, so spare a thought for those who do! If you bring it inside and it doesn’t rain, you have a tinge of regret. If you have it outside and it pours, nobody wins. If you follow Ben Noll’s advice and he’s wrong, at least you can blame someone else 😉
That said, I don’t think the inside vs outside call over weekend is too hard. The risk for thunderstorms is high enough and not worth risking the safety of large groups of people.
Weather play-by-play 🎓
Thursday afternoon/evening: chance for passing showers. Graduation odds: 70% outdoor | 30% indoor.
Friday afternoon/evening: areas of rain and possible thunderstorms. Graduation odds: 30% outdoor | 70% indoor.
Saturday morning: passing showers possible. Graduation odds: 70% outdoor | 30% indoor.
Saturday afternoon/evening: widespread showers and thunderstorms likely. Graduation odds: 30% outdoor | 70% indoor.
Sunday morning: isolated showers and thunderstorms developing by late morning. Graduation odds 70% outdoor | 30% indoor.
Sunday afternoon: widespread showers and thunderstorms likely. Graduation odds: 20% outdoor | 80% indoor.
Advice for those planning parties: the morning is more likely to be dry than the afternoon over the weekend. Have a plan to get indoors if it pours or thunder roars ⚡
The forecast may not make you feel much better, but I hope it helps!
Good luck and may the grads shine bright no matter the weather.
