It’s been 10 years since the Hudson Valley last had a month of August that lacked 90 degree heat.
In August 2013, the highest temperature recorded at Poughkeepsie was 87, White Plains 87, and Montgomery 86. It also failed to reach 90 during August 2008, 1994, and 1990 — so four times in the last 33 years.
So far, 85 is the highest we’ve been able to reach in August 2023.
Indications are that the lack-of-heat-streak will continue this week! I presume you’re not complaining?
And if heat really isn’t your thing, you might enjoy spending a little time reading my latest premium post: Five maps you should see about next winter ❄️
If you’re not quite ready for winter and prefer to take things one day, or week, at a time, I understand!
As for the week ahead, it’s not looking too bad. Although there will be some rain drops to dodge, dry days will outnumber wet ones and next weekend is looking pretty decent at this point 👌
Monday: a dry start to the week… you might be awakened by a late night downpour 😴
Tuesday: elevated humidity with a few showers around, maybe an afternoon thunderstorm
Wednesday: improved weather, clouds and sun
Thursday: looking pretty good with a good deal of sun
Friday: a cold front will bring the chance for showers and thunderstorms, possibly heavy ⚡
Saturday-Sunday: could it be… a dry and sunny weekend with lower humidity⁉️
The week of the 21st is looking warmer and drier than normal at this point. We have waited long enough for a sustained stretch of good weather. Better late than never! 🌞
Tropical update: the tropics remain quiet at the moment, but show signs of awakening in late August. Watch this space 🌀
In the forest 🌴
Forests in New Zealand are pretty awesome. They don’t have ticks, snakes, venomous creatures, or poisonous plants!
The plant life is interesting, with sub-tropical species thriving in the moist and temperate climate.
Here’s one you won’t find in New York: the New Zealand fern. These curlicues are also known as "koru" in the indigenous language, Māori. Young ones can be spotted coiled in a tight spiral.
You may miss out on 90 degree heat this week, but I hope you don’t miss out on some happy moments — make the most of it! ✌️
Thank you Ben. I for one am grateful for the less than 90 degree heat and the rainfall has kept us out of a drought. I am enjoying the the colors of nature from all the rainfall and warm, not too hot, temperatures . Stay safe.
