January is one of the cloudiest months of the year and this January has been no exception — especially the last week! Some good news is that the sun will indeed shine through the clouds this week, but we’ll need to get past another round of gloomy weather today (Sunday).
As of early Sunday morning, temperatures were running in the mid-to-upper 30s across the Hudson Valley — milder than forecast. This will probably have a limiting influence on how much snow falls today, yielding something closer to a bust-like scenario. Rain will mix with and/or change to wet snow this morning, especially across hilly and elevated areas near and north of I-84.
At this time, accumulation looks to be an inch or less for most valley locations with elevated places like the Catskills seeing 1-3 inches. In the valley, the most likely time for snow is from mid-morning through about midday.
Outside of the Catskills, light snow and flurries tonight and Monday morning likely won’t accumulate due to above freezing temperatures, so widespread delays are not expected at this time. Follow along here for updates.
After this storm, the region will slide into a drier than normal pattern. But will it last? Will we get off lightly during what is typically the snowiest month of the year? Not so fast! Premium subscribers will receive a February outlook at the end of this post.
Monday: scattered morning light snow and flurries with clouds hanging tough
Tuesday: chilly; the sun will try to shine through the clouds
Wednesday: remaining chilly, more clouds than sun
Thursday: not as cold, the sun may poke through the clouds
Friday: not too cold but mostly cloudy with passing showers possible
Saturday-Sunday: turning colder, favoring dry weather 📉
Looking ahead to the week of February 5th, conditions continue to look drier than normal. Looks like you’ll be hearing from me a bit less over the next two weeks (I probably just jinxed it 🙃).
Cool clouds ☁️
As a meteorologist, I’m looking up at the sky a little more than the average person. I particularly enjoy scanning the sky for cool clouds and things that are out of the ordinary. This past week I was on a “cool cloud” hot streak! Here’s what I saw:
