October 2024 is set to become the driest month on record in the Hudson Valley, at least since records began 1125 months ago in January 1931 🌵
The next chance for rain is late Friday night — most likely not until the calendar changes to November.
The dot plot below illustrates monthly rainfall in Poughkeepsie over the last 93+ years, with October 2024 highlighted red as being the driest month on record, at least provisionally. The current record holder is June 1988.
In New York City, October 2024 is expected to become the first month on record with no measurable rainfall since records began at Central Park in 1869.
Will the dryness linger into winter? In case you missed it, I released my Hudson Valley winter outlook last weekend.
The week ahead
After a cool start, a warming trend is expected to culminate in one of the warmest Halloweens on record in the region, followed by a cooler finish.
The current Halloween record is 78˚F, set back in 1946.
Monday: cool with plenty of sun
Tuesday: partly sunny and milder
Wednesday: warm with a good deal of sun
Thursday: mostly sunny with record high temperatures possible 🌡️
Friday: a passing early morning shower; breezy and turning cooler
Saturday-Sunday: mostly sunny and dry; cool Saturday, milder Sunday
Looking ahead to the week of November 4th, a moist pattern will develop to the north and west of the region. There’s a chance that some of this moisture will spill into the Hudson Valley with the week having a warm start and a cooler finish.
🍂 Enjoy the foliage on the backdrop of blue skies this week ✌️
Programming note: this time next week… I’ll be traveling to Washington D.C.! That means my weekly newsletter will arrive at a slightly different time. Stay tuned for updates and pictures!
