A cooler, changeable, and blustery week
Update #646: gusty winds will continue in the Hudson Valley as temperatures dip.
Temperatures have been above average so far this March in the Hudson Valley, with several days surging well into the 60s.
This has caused crocuses to poke their way out of the ground, soaking up the sun after a cold winter. Spring leaf out is running ahead of schedule.
The week ahead won’t be as warm, with several frosts expected, particularly on Thursday.
Sharp temperature contrasts that have fueled dust storms, wildfires, and tornadoes have also fueled strong winds, which you’ve probably noticed.
New York has been the third-windiest state, relative to average, this month.
More wind is in the forecast this coming week, especially on Tuesday and Friday.
The combination of the early leaf out and windy conditions may contribute to more challenging conditions for allergy sufferers this season 🤧
Monday will be snowy in the Great Lakes and New England, with the rain/snow dividing line coming quite close to the Hudson Valley — perhaps as close as the Catskills. On Wednesday, another fast-moving system could pass near the region or miss to the south, with a slight chance for rain or wet snow.
The weather pattern looks bumpy next weekend as storms brew to the west and the area sits near a dividing line between mild and cool temperatures, making forecasts more challenging.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be cool, windy, and changeable in the Hudson Valley. In other words, keep your jacket close by and be ready for just about anything.
Monday: gloomy and cool for much of the day with rain, clouds breaking late
Tuesday: sunshine returns, but the wind adds a chill to the air
Wednesday: a slight chance for rain or wet snow; if not, partly sunny and cool
Thursday: a mix of morning sun and afternoon clouds
Friday: windy again with partial sunshine
Saturday-Sunday: the region will sit near a dividing line between cool and warm air, making this forecast extra challenging — Sunday looks warmer than Saturday, though; chance for showers both days
Looking ahead to the week of March 31, big temperature swings are in the picture. A substantial warm up looks possible in the central states, which could spill eastward at some point during the first week of April. If this were to happen, the Hudson Valley could have its first 70 degree temperatures of the year.
Hope your week is warmer than the weather! ✌️
