A hot, humid, and smoky week, then sweet relief
Update #664: the week ahead will start sticky and smoky in the Hudson Valley, but end much cooler.
An extended break from relentlessly humid weather is coming late this week.
That’s the good news.
But first, there will be days of high heat, humidity, and Canadian wildfire smoke to contend with.
Smoke returned to the Hudson Valley on Saturday, with many residents reporting a campfire-like smell. As of early Sunday, air quality levels were moderate to unhealthy across the area with alerts in place. On Sunday afternoon, smoke will be blown away by southwesterly winds, but return on Monday due to northerly winds from Canada.
Because of light winds, some smoke may stick around until at least Thursday, when a cold front will blow through the region.
This front will usher much more comfortable late-week conditions — but the potential for more smoke.
Summer is far from over, so despite a cooler start to August on Friday, muggy weather will return by the middle part of next month.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be hot, humid, and hazy through Wednesday. A front on Thursday will probably bring some rain, with cooler air filtering into the region by Friday.
Monday: hazy, hot, and humid with a new surge of wildfire smoke 💨
Tuesday: hazy, hot, and extremely humid
Wednesday: remaining hazy, hot, and humid
Thursday: humid with showers and storms possible
Friday: cooler and less humid, but a chance for more wildfire smoke
Saturday-Sunday: mostly sunny and comfy — but there could be wildfire smoke
▶️ Watch temperatures change over the next two weeks:
Looking ahead to the week of Aug. 4, conditions will probably remain comfortable to start the week, followed by a gradual warming trend. Rainfall amounts generally look below-average — but storms could return late.
Winter… is coming
It may be hard to believe, but meteorological winter is little more than four months away.
If you’re ready to ditch the smoke, heat, and humidity for winter hats and hot chocolate, come to the Southern Hemisphere. Or at least enjoy these views from my long weekend trip to the snow:
Think… snow, not smoke 🙂
