A week of mostly settled but smoky weather
Update #665: humidity is down and the vibes are up in the Hudson Valley, but wildfire smoke is coming.

This summer has not been known for long stretches of settled weather, but the week ahead will flip the script.
On the bright side, humidity will be notably lower than it has been all season and temperatures will generally be comfortable in the Hudson Valley.
But high pressure over the region will cause air to stagnate — and, unfortunately, that air will be filled with wildfire smoke starting on Monday. It will probably stick around through at least Thursday and have varying effects on air quality and haze. Because it will settle near the ground, people living across the Northeast will be able to smell it. People that are sensitive to the smoke should limit strenuous outdoor activity, particularly if and when air quality alerts are issued.
The Canadian Prairies continue to suffer from extreme drought conditions.

In short, sticky weather will be exchanged for smoky weather. You can learn about which states experienced record humidity levels during July in my recent Washington post article.
We’re not yet done with high heat and humidity — it will return next week.
So enjoy it while it’s on vacation.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be be low in humidity, but high in smoke.
Monday: mostly sunny to start with increasing amounts of wildfire smoke
Tuesday: a mixture of sun, clouds, and wildfire smoke
Wednesday: like Tuesday, but cloudier
Thursday: not as warm with wildfire smoke and haze still hovering around
Friday: more sunshine
Saturday-Sunday: turning warmer with a good deal of sun
The week of Aug. 11 looks hot and sticky.
Crystal clear water
What’s the clearest water you’ve ever seen? Surely, it’s not the Hudson.
I snapped these shots in the Hollyford River, Fiordland, New Zealand last weekend, dipping my GoPro into the icy, glacial waters.
It’s always exciting to open up the photos on my computer hours later, because I never quite know I’ll see. It’s so clear that you almost can’t see the water!
Turn up the volume to hear the water rush past the submerged camera.
Despite the smoke, I hope this week brings you clarity ✌️
Today, August 5 up on the west coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavut winds are SE 9K/h with visibility at 0.4km. Smoke, lots of it. Blowing in from Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
