No hurricane, just sunshine
Update #673: thanks to a hurricane, the weather will be great in the Hudson Valley.
The Hudson Valley’s weather gets a counterintuitive headline this week: the weather will be great… because of a hurricane!
Let me explain.
Although two tropical disturbances are swirling across the Atlantic — powerful Hurricane Humberto and soon-to-be Tropical Storm Imelda — the United States will be spared of a worst case scenario. Future Imelda will pass several hundred miles offshore of the Carolinas early in the week, tugged out to sea by a strong Humberto.
If you’d like to read more about the storms, here’s a gift link to my latest Washington Post article.

But being more than 500 miles to the north of these storms will put the Hudson Valley in the sweet spot of sinking air and sunshine — a meteorological process known as subsidence.
And, as a result, the weather this week looks pretty darn good, with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s and a good deal of sunshine.
But check out those overnight lows later in the week! 30s! 🥶
The week ahead
The week ahead will start warm but turn cooler on Wednesday when a cold front from Canada blows through. Morning temperatures will even dip into the 30s.
Rain looks unlikely at this point.
Monday: warm with high clouds from tropical storms streaming overhead
Tuesday: remaining warm with a breeze developing
Wednesday: much cooler and breezy as Canadian air mass arrives
Thursday: a chilly morning but a stunningly sunny day
Friday: a crisp start followed by a gorgeous day
Saturday-Sunday: warming up, sun sticks around
Looking ahead to the week of October 6, it looks mostly dry with a warm start.
The animation below shows temperatures as a difference from average during the next two weeks. Red colors favor frequent above-average temperatures.
Hope your week is as bright as the weather ✌️
(P.S., the sunshine won’t last forever! Be sure to subscribe to receive my Hudson Valley winter outlook later in October)
