Season's first snow ❄️
Update #682: Accumulating snow on Tuesday will probably cause school closings in the Hudson Valley.
The first snow event of the season will hit the Hudson Valley on Tuesday, with an increasing chance for school closings.
Timing: Snow will likely start between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Tuesday and end during the evening.
Amounts: Snow amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected for most places. Whether accumulation ends up on the low-end or high-end of that range in your town depends on how far north the rain-snow line advances.
Impacts: Roads will become snow-covered and slippery regionwide on Tuesday morning, with the storm impacting both the morning and afternoon commutes.
While snow is forecast in the mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills — especially from I-84 northward — there remains a question as to how far north the rain-snow line will advance. Right now, it looks like precipitation could start as snow in Rockland and Westchester Counties as well as New York City before mixing with and/or changing to rain. This detail will be refined in future updates.
With the storm ending on Tuesday evening, crews should have time to clear roads and parking lots in time for Wednesday morning, though slick conditions will persist on untreated surfaces.
The week ahead
After Tuesday, there’s a chance for more wintry weather on Saturday. It’s also going to be a chilly week — especially Friday, when a lobe of the polar vortex may visit!
Monday: a bit breezy; otherwise, a decent start to the week
Tuesday: snow day ❄️
Wednesday: decent weather returns
Thursday: strong cold front brings winds, chance for a brief burst of snow
Friday: frigid 🥶
Saturday-Sunday: there’s a chance for another storm next weekend, but it’s too early for details
Looking ahead to the week of December 8, it could be quite cold with more storm chances.
Stay tuned for another storm update on Monday!
