Snow on Tuesday ❄️
Update #685: I'm dreaming of a white Christmas in the Hudson Valley.
Was a white Christmas on your wish list this year? Santa got the message! 🎅
A well-timed storm on Tuesday will probably bring just enough snow so that there’s some left on Thursday morning.
And for schools still in session on Tuesday… well, you might just have an early start to the holiday break 😇
Timing
Snow developing between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Tuesday, ending during the afternoon.
Amounts
Snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is most likely across the region. Snow may fall moderately for a time on Tuesday morning, including during the commute.
Impacts
Snow-covered and slippery roads are likely on Tuesday morning, with temperatures in the upper 20s to lower 30s. Because of the timing of the snow during the morning commute and through a chunk of the day, school closings are probable. Road conditions should generally improve during the afternoon when snow ends and temperatures rise above freezing.
Confidence
Confidence is high for snow on Tuesday, although there is uncertainty in exact amounts and timing of the steadiest snow. The weather feature driving the snow, a warm front, tends to be more challenging to predict than a typical low pressure system. These details will become clearer as the storm nears.
I will sent another update on Monday morning.
Although it will be windy, the weather will improve on Wednesday. Christmas Day looks pretty decent at this point as a weak system probably passes south of the Hudson Valley.
Elsewhere, around 20 states, from California to Indiana, are expecting record or near-record high temperatures on Christmas this year, but the Hudson Valley — and wider Northeast — won’t be participating.
It won’t be frigid, but it won’t exactly be warm, either. That’s because air masses from Canada will generally win out over warmer ones from the Southwest.
The week ahead
Two to three storms are possible during the week ahead: on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday.
Monday: a tranquil start to the week with some sunshine
Tuesday: snow likely accumulating 1 to 3 inches ❄️
Wednesday: windy and becoming sunny
Thursday: partly sunny, probably dry 🎄
Friday: another storm approaches; depending on its track, it could bring rain or a wintry mix
Saturday-Sunday: probably drying out for Saturday before another front passes on Sunday, likely bringing some rain
Looking ahead to the week of December 29, it will probably start cold before turning a bit milder around the start of the new year.
Happy h❄️lidays!
Happy December solstice ☀️
Winter officially arrives on Sunday!
The December solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. The noon sun shines directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn, bringing summer to the Southern Hemisphere.
In the Hudson Valley, there’s about 9 hours and 10 minutes of daylight on Sunday.
As Earth moves along its orbit, the sun slowly makes its way back toward the Tropic of Cancer, reaching it at the June solstice — ushering summer.
