Update #693: The worst of winter is probably behind us, but this week will have a little bit of everything in the Hudson Valley.
Hello there!
The worst of winter is probably behind us, but this week will have a little bit of everything in the Hudson Valley: a dash of snow, a passing wintry mix, milder temperatures, some rain, and a bit more mix.
But because temperatures look borderline, the impacts from these weather events will probably be mitigated.
First up is a storm passing to the south of the region on Sunday night. It could graze the Hudson Valley with a dusting of snow into early Monday, but it doesn’t look like a big deal.
More disturbances will follow early Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and next weekend. A rocky weather road lies ahead.
Many schools in the region are off for several days this week, but I’ll send weather updates if and when needed.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be milder than recent ones, but it will also be unsettled.
Monday: after some possible snow before dawn, it will turn partly sunny
Tuesday: a light wintry mix could pass through before sunrise, but then it will turn mild with sunny breaks
Wednesday: another storm will approach, probably bringing some rain with a low chance for wintry precipitation
Thursday: cloudy with a break from storms for a day
Friday: rain or a wintry mix may again approach
Saturday-Sunday: more stormy conditions are expected next weekend, probably on Sunday
Looking ahead to the week of February 23, it will start chilly before turning milder. I think it’s safe to say that the worst of winter is behind us at this point, but March can be a tricky month.
March 2023 and 2018 share climate traits with the present year. Both of those months featured significant winter storms.
There’s light at the end of this long tunnel, but we’re not quite out yet! ✌️
For much of the Hudson Valley, it’s been the coldest winter since the mid-1990s, considering average temperatures since December 1, producing remarkable ice coverage on the Hudson. You can read more about that in my recent Washington Post article.
Greetings from… Rarotonga 🏝️
This week, my newsletter is coming from a small island in the South Pacific called Rarotonga, which is part of the Cook Islands.
It’s a relatively short, 3-hour and 45-minute flight northeast into the tropics from Auckland, making it an attractive holiday destination for Kiwis (and Australians).
Being summer, it’s the wet season here, and the humidity hits you as soon as you step off the plane. Ocean temperatures are in the low-to-mid 80s.
Visiting this time of year means fewer crowds… and entire beaches to yourself! It’s one of those places where the world really slows down, life simplifies, and tranquility reigns, even in the rain.
I’m grateful to be able to visit and share it with you. More photos next week!
