Tropical storm remnants to bring rain
Update #661: The remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal will bring one of several downpours to the Hudson Valley this week.
Hello!
A warm, dry weekend will give way to a very humid week with occasional downpours, potentially heavy enough to cause localized flooding in the Hudson Valley.
The first tropical storm of the season, named Chantal, made landfall near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina early Sunday. This storm will drag tropical moisture into the Northeast on Monday and Tuesday, likely bringing downpours to the Hudson Valley, especially in the afternoons.
What once looked to be a hot and dry start to the week has turned muggier, cloudier, and wetter — perhaps a sign of how this summer will generally play out across the region.

Chantal is not linked to the deadly floods that occurred in central Texas last Friday. That flood was a result of a slow-moving thunderstorm cluster formed by the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry — a system that made landfall in southeastern Mexico about a week ago and meandered northward into Texas. The storm siphoned record-levels of moisture from the tropics in the Pacific and Atlantic, likely elevating the rain amounts that it could drop. Early morning rain fell very hard and fast into a river valley, with about four months’ worth of rain measured in four hours, causing devastating flash river flooding.
There will be several chances for heavy showers and thunderstorms in the Hudson Valley this week, some of which could cause localized flash flooding.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be marked by occasional downpours and high humidity.
Monday: some sun and very humid with showers and thunderstorms likely, some heavy, mainly after noon
Tuesday: partly sunny and very humid with scattered showers and storms, mainly later
Wednesday: a mix of sun clouds 🌟
Thursday: chance for widespread downpours and high humidity returns
Friday: remaining muggy with isolated-to-scattered thunderstorm chances
Saturday-Sunday: it doesn’t look like a washout, but there will be a continued risk for pop-up storms next weekend
Looking ahead to the week of July 14, humidity is forecast to continue to run above-average as a downpour-dodging summer continues.
