Like all those computers that went down a few days ago, there will be another comeback this week: the humidity.
This may not be a comeback that you’re rooting for.
July 4th-18th was the 2nd-most humid stretch on record in the Hudson Valley, with the maximum dew point (a measure of humidity) exceeding 70˚F for 15 consecutive days. July 26th-August 15th 1988 (21 days) was the only longer stretch of such humid conditions.
A strong Bermuda high will send moist and humid southerly winds into the region, especially from Tuesday onward.
With all this humidity, you can cool off by reading my latest premium post about next winter, released yesterday:
However, the air won’t be heavy all week — wonderful weather next weekend will hopefully make up for the less than stellar conditions earlier in the week.
Monday: increasing clouds (and humidity) with a late-day shower possible
Tuesday: humid with clouds and some sun; scattered showers possible and maybe a thunderstorm
Wednesday: partly sunny and very humid with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely
Thursday: like Wednesday 🔂
Friday: becoming less humid with sunshine 👏
Saturday-Sunday: looking great with low humidity! 🌟
💨 Also in the category of comebacks you aren’t rooting for: Canadian wildfire smoke. Over the last week, extensive wildfires have developed across western Canada, and their smoke is now starting to cross the border into the western and central United States. It looks unlikely to be a major concern in the Hudson Valley this week, but I’ll be keeping an eye on things.
Looking ahead to the week of July 29th, the fourth heatwave of the summer is possible as hot air from the western U.S. blows eastward 🥵
Into the abyss 😶🌫️
The heart of winter in New Zealand often comes with frosts and fogs. Auckland is not immune to either, but fog is typically more impressive in other parts of the country.
However, last week, we experienced the most impressive day of fog that I’ve experienced since moving here.
Visibility at times was probably a tenth of a mile.
Recent rainfall has really moistened things up and calm winds and clear skies created prime conditions for radiational cooling — and radiation fog.
Here’s what it looked like last Thursday in Auckland:
Normally, this would be the view:
With weather, the only guarantee is change. The humidity (and fog) will pass ✌️
Thank you Ben! Oh the Summer East humility 🤪🥵
