It will soon feel more like March than May
Update #654: Monday and Tuesday will be decent, but then it will be gloomy and feel more like March.
It’s rained almost every day this May in the Hudson Valley. Much of the region has received one to two times its normal rainfall amount for the entire month.
Surely there will be more sunshine soon, right?
After a sunny and dry start to the week, a nor’easter is forecast to form near the coast, bringing several days of cool, gloomy weather from Wednesday to Friday.
That’s right — a nor’easter, in May!
Temperatures later this week may struggle to reach 50 as the combination of rain, clouds, Canadian air, and a stiff breeze makes it briefly feel more like March.
While this probably isn’t the weather news you’d like to hear, there are a few silver linings:
The region is being spared of devastating and deadly severe storms that continue to pound central states
It won’t be excessively hot nor humid like it is in Texas and Florida, where an early season heat dome is making it feel like mid-summer [gift link to read about it]
The Hudson Valley won’t start summer with a drought
In my spring outlook issued months ago, I said that an early, sustained change to summer-like weather was unlikely this year. That has turned out to be correct. My thoughts on the upcoming summer season will be sent to premium subscribers by the end of the month.
The week ahead
Monday and Tuesday will be okay, but it will go downhill after that. The weekend doesn’t look too bad at this point.
Monday: windy with plenty of sunshine
Tuesday: morning sunshine, then increasing afternoon clouds
Wednesday: cool with rain developing
Thursday: windy and cool with rain likely
Friday: more clouds than sun with lingering showers possible
Saturday-Sunday: partly sunny with passing showers possible
Looking ahead to the week of May 26, signs are that below average temperatures will continue, though it looks unlikely to be as cool nor wet as this coming week.
Watch the air masses swirl southward from Canada in the below animation.
Meteorological summer starts on Sunday, June 1. Hope your week is warmer than the weather ✌️
