Warming up, drying out
Update #656: meteorological summer has arrived and temperatures will rise this week in the Hudson Valley.
Sunday is the first day of meteorological summer! It surely won’t feel like it, but it will soon as temperatures rise into the 80s and humidity builds.
If you’re wondering what the season ahead has in store, check out my just-released Hudson Valley summer outlook!
A summer of sunshine or downpours?
Happy almost meteorological summer! Summer, according to meteorological calendars, starts on Sunday, June 1. This year, the first day of the meteorological season certainly won’t feel like summer.
Parts of the region received more than double its normal May rainfall. While the week ahead won’t be rain-free, there will be more dry days than wet ones.
Outside of the Hudson Valley, there’s plenty going on in the weather world this week:
Smoke from uncontained wildfires in Manitoba, Canada, is pouring into the United States, creating hazy skies
A plume of dust from the Sahara Desert in Africa is forecast to reach the Gulf Coast later this week, possibly colliding with the wildfire smoke
A solar storm may allow the northern lights to become visible from Sunday night into Monday morning
In the Hudson Valley, wildfire smoke may become more noticeable on Tuesday, though it won’t be nearly as bad as the June 2023 smoke episode that turned skies orange.

The week ahead
The week ahead will have a fantastic start, weather-wise.
Humidity will build starting on Wednesday, bringing a chance for scattered showers and storms from Thursday through Saturday.
Monday: a stunning start to the week with sunshine and comfortable temperatures
Tuesday: warming up with plenty of sunshine, possibly filtered by wildfire smoke
Wednesday: becoming warmer and more humid as sunny weather continues
Thursday: probably the hottest day of the week; slight chance for a late-day shower or thunderstorm
Friday: heat and humidity continues, chance for scattered showers and storms
Saturday-Sunday: a warm, humid Saturday with showers and storms possibly around, followed by lowering humidity on Sunday
Looking ahead to the week of June 9, conditions are currently looking warm and humid with occasional wet weather.
Enjoy the warm sunshine this week! ☀️
