Mild, moister start to fall
Update #672: Fall starts on Monday as temperatures and rain chances rise in the Hudson Valley this week.
Goodbye summer, hello fall! Comfortable temperatures will usher the new season on Monday.
Despite changing seasons, the week ahead will bring pretty consistent temperatures to the Hudson Valley. Like weeks past, highs will generally range from the lower 70s to the lower 80s.
However, there will soon be a change in the rain department. But it’s uncertain how much will fall.
A slow-moving area of low pressure — part of a weather feature called an omega block — will form over the Midwest, with a muggy and moist southerly flow developing in the East. This disturbance will bring opportunities for beneficial rainfall in the Hudson Valley — as abnormally dry conditions expand nationally.
However, a blocking area of high pressure over southern Canada could suppress some of the stormy weather to the south, making the forecast from Thursday onward more uncertain than normal.
If you have plans later this week, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast as it will change!
Also, an intensifying jet stream over the Pacific Ocean will cause warmer-than-average temperatures to blow across the country from late September into October. For the Hudson Valley, this should mean more nice weather.
There’s one tropical storm in the Atlantic as of early Sunday: Gabrielle. Gabrielle is forecast to pass just east of Bermuda on Monday. Other than that, the tropics are pretty quiet. If you’re interested in learning about why, you can read one of my recent Washington Post articles, which explores the counterintuitive concept of how warmer seas can contribute to fewer storms in the tropics.
The week ahead
The week ahead looks rather warm and occasionally muggy and moist in the Hudson Valley.
Monday: nice with a good deal of sun 🌟
Tuesday: warm and humid; evening shower/storm chance
Wednesday: more clouds than sun and still a bit muggy with a shower chance
Thursday: more clouds than sun and cooler with a chance for showers or rain
Friday: mostly cloudy with showers or rain possible
Saturday-Sunday: partial sunshine; still a chance for showers
If you have plans later this week, be sure to keep an eye on the forecast as it will change!
Looking ahead to the week of September 29, conditions are favored to be warmer and drier than average in the Hudson Valley.
Happy fall! 🍂
🚂 Next stop… winter! My Hudson Valley winter outlook will be released during the second half of October.
