Chilly start, milder finish
Update #680: No big winter storms are on the horizon, but December could get interesting.
A week after the Hudson Valley saw its first flurries of the season — as well as a vivid display of the northern lights — another strong cold front will rush through the region from Sunday into Monday.
The chilly conditions will be intensified by the wind, which will gradually fade by midweek.
A late-week warming trend could come with a bit of rain, but there are no serious winter storms on the horizon — yet.
Meteorologists are keenly watching a unique pattern — called a sudden stratospheric warming — unfolding near the North Pole. It could disrupt the polar vortex, with its icy air streaming southward into the United States during December. This may fuel colder, possibly snowier conditions next month. You can read more about that here.
The week ahead
The week ahead will be pretty seasonable in the Hudson Valley with a transition from colder to milder temperatures.
Monday: the coldest day of the week, intensified by the wind 🥶
Tuesday: remaining chilly and breezy
Wednesday: winds relax, temperatures rise slightly
Thursday: clouds invade
Friday: turning milder as approaching storm brings southerly winds and chance for some rain
Saturday-Sunday: dry and relatively mild conditions are currently favored, though keep an eye on things in case that changes
🦃 Looking ahead to the week of Thanksgiving, temperatures are looking rather mild. It may also be drier-than-normal. Here’s hoping for some decent travel weather!
Enjoy some recent drone photos above one of New Zealand’s spectacular braided glacial rivers, the Waitaki, on a warm, late-spring day.
I’ll try to package up the above weather and send it to you. ETA: April 2026 😉

The long range models are already showing some big anomalies in the upper troposphere throughout North America. It’s looking a very cold December is on its way in parts! Great edition, Ben! 🍻
